Gibson Les Paul Review

 IN 1957, both the gold-top and Custom Gibson Les Pauls acquired new pickups-the twin-coil,
"humbucking" transducers developed a few years earlier by staffer Seth Lover (1910-1997). The rich timbre provided by these units has come to be widely regarded as the "classic Les Paul sound," although some players retain a preference for the P-90s and Alnicos fitted to earlier models.

The next important development in the Les Paul's history occurred the following year, when the original (non-Custom) instrument's gold finish was replaced with a sunburst look; to coincide with this change, the bosses at Kalamazoo decided to give the guitar a new name: the Les Paul Standard.

Probably the most famous and highly revered of all the many differant types of Les Paul, it was initially available for just years, during which, according to figures quoted by guitar historian Tony Bacon, only about 1,700 were made. Partly as a result of their scarcity, 1958-60 Standards now have an almost mystical status among some musicians; but at the time of their production, they were not especially big sellers, and eventually discontinued, along with the rest single-cutaway Pauls, to make way for Gibson' SG-shaped solid-bodies.

Their disappearance was only temporary: a reissued Les Paul Standard debuted in 1968, but it sported a gold finish instead of a sunburst one, and it's humbucking pickups were much smaller than those found on its predecessor. It was followed by a variety of other new models, but the 1958-style Standard with full-size humbuckers did not return to regular production at Gibson until 1976.
